Newcomers youth program had already helped me a lot in developing my skills as well as myself so far and I believe it will keep on help me improve.
Hello, I’m Itanbi and I am a newcomer. I was already a part of a program called peer tutoring and park dale newcomer youth committee organised by the same organisation, as a volunteer or as a participant. Along the road I came to know about the summer program which interested me. I wanted to provide them with the answer to the question that I believed each and every newcomer youth has, at least i had that no one answered. I think no! Actually I believe that this summer program really helps the participants to adjust, make new friends and know their city and other things. So yeah that’s the reason behind me joining this program as a volunteer.
Joining new groups, meeting new people obviously brings you new skills and new experiences and makes new friends. After joining this program I have gained all those too. I have improved my skills like communication skill, as I have to talk to new people. I have defiantly improved that a lot. I used to be really shy when it comes to talking to new people. I wouldn’t even have introduced myself, but now I have gained enough confidence to walk up to people and introduce myself and make a small conversation I also have improved my punctually. I am able to relate with newcomer as i was in their shoe once. I have also made tons of new friends through this program. They are all great and awesome. They held me, make me laugh. We act crazy and accept each other’s craziness.
Experience comes through what you do. Joining this program has filled me with lots of new experience. You gain lots of new knowledge. I would love to share my experience that I gained through becoming participants and as a volunteer through this and other programs I joined as a newcomer. I`ll share my high school experience. I know this experience is really important to be known because the schooling system that we have been through until we move to Canada is really different. I wished someone had explained to me that would have made my two weeks of being a new student is a totally new school a heck lot easier.
Challenges that I still face as a newcomer has somehow decreased, but I still have challenges that i have to face. I can still get nervous and shy when I have to stand up and shy when I have to stand up and present things in front of large crowd. I have to keep reminding myself that each and every person in front of me was a newcomer once in their lives. So they understand and know my feeling, as they were in my shoe once. My speaking style or accent can frustrate me. I don’t know if it’s my fault or the person hearing it. It has some clear issues. Either way it always makes me irritated with myself, and I guess thinking about being in a new country different than yours bring lot of negative thinking about yourself that is not true at all.
So I guess through what I have been through being a newcomer my suggestion to all the newcomer out there would be think positive! Don’t let others put u down just because you are new. You have every once of possibilities and imagination as others that have been living here for 30 years. So never let yourself down. Be happy that you have landed in this land of opportunity. And one more suggestion just, be yourself.
