Success story of the month
“Shake Tobacco Off Movies” (STOM) Youth Project Grant by Toronto Public Health!
Due to the successful running of the current youth-led project, “Parkdale Youth 4 Tobacco Free Sports and Recreation” ending in December 2010, our youth got approved for yet another tobacco related new project in 2011. We would like to thank Citizenship & Immigration Canada and TORONTO Public Health for their support in giving our youth such a great opportunity to develop themselves, be positively engaged and help their peers and the community.
Shake Tobacco Off Movies (STOM) runs from January till June 2011.
The project’s goal is to educate youth and community on relationship between tobacco and movies; how it is important to have special ads to warn the audience when smoking exists in movies and to implement special ratings for movies that depict smoking. Youth, by helping lead this project will positively influence their peers and communities to advocate for banning smoking in G /PG films and asking “R” ratings for all movies that shows smoking. Through an online petition that starts next year, people in Toronto, Canada and all over the world can sign the petition in support of rating R and 18A for movies with smoking. The team will also produce an AD and a short documentary that will be screened in the community in June 2011.
The project has 10 core team members aged 13 to 19 and will recruit 15 dedicated youth volunteers aged 13 to 24 to help support the success of the project. The team leaders of this project are Tsewang (girl 14 yrs), Karma (boy 16 yrs) and Ali (17 yrs).
All team members and volunteers will receive certificate and honorarium at the completion of the project in June 2011.

LiteratureOn the Street
by Bramooth, Vinoth & Tharshigan (Youth in Grade 10) My best friend forgot to pay the rent And now I’m on the street, Have nothing to eat Where do I sleep on the streets? Cause, I’m not famous anymore because I’m not in school anymore We were in IB but we were Sent to the V.P. and our parents got some B.P. This poem... by Kalden (Grade 12) & Choewang (Grade 11) Here's a poem, my gift to you. It's not a bribe, to let me through. I know I haven't known you, for very long. But let me tell you, "You're special!", through my tongue. My feelings, I voice, through this poem. My caged heart, broken from it's dome. Your radiant eyes, that gave me the strength, to come forward, to express how I felt. I am a half, you are my other counter part. Someone i can converse with, heart to heart. I stopped my heart, from sprouting these emotions, As I feared it will be crushed, crumbled to pieces. But the picture of your face, took refuge, deep inside my heart. Only that I found out, that your smile hit the dart . I will be waiting for you, in this dimension of space and time. Until you are ready, to be my partner in crime. |
