The newcomer youth summer program is held during the month of July and August, to encourage the newcomer youth to bring themselves out, become more confident and open and also to help them with their English language skills through communication. This summer program is perfect for all newcomers. It’s a place where you make new friends, improve your language skills and not to forget to have fun!
The reason I joined the program was mainly to get out of sitting at home whole day long, to make new friends (which I did) and to gain some knowledge outside of school. I think I have made a good choice of joining this program because, even though I didn’t knew many people at first, I have made many friends, and making new friends is something that no one would like to give up or walk away. I guess everyone has joined this program, did it for the same reason as I did (may be?) and I’m sure they’ve got what they wanted from the beginning.
One of the main differences between the schools in Canada and my school in India is that, in Canada we have to so presentations in our classes where as back in my school in India the only reading we did was reading a paragraph to the class. Therefore joining this program helped me a lot when it comes to oral presentation/public speaking. This helped me to be able to have confidence while speaking to an audience through practice. I guess the saying “practice makes a man perfect” is true, although I still haven’t reached that level, I’m still learning.
Friends are always awesome, and I have made a lot of friends in this program. They are all awesome and I m glad I have friends like them. This program even has outdoor activities. We went to High Park, the farmers market and now center island. Although I have been to High Park and Center Island, I had never been to farmers market or even know that there was a farmers market. But this program gave me an opportunity to go to this market and learn about it.
The most challenging thing I still experience is getting a job, which would be my first. If it was not for this program, I would still not have a person who I could use as a reference. My advice to other new comer youth is that join this program. It’s a fun and a learning experience, which everyone must join.
Today we are at Center Island and like other outdoor programs it was a lot of fun. We played Frisbee and soccer and got to learn a lot form today’s experience. I would rate this program a 10 on 10 if I had to because it was lot of fun.
