20th June, 2010 was the day I came to Toronto. I was very excited to come to a new place at the same time I was so scared and had a very low confidence. In Toronto I live in 24 Shaw which is near downtown. There are so many fast food shops around my place like McDonalds, Subway etc. Back in India I wouldn’t just rush into them but here I felt like the fish which had left the pond and come to the Ocean. I was blank.
After a month or so my mom’s friend luckily who is the supervisor of this new youth program. Suggested my mom that should join this program. I really didn’t wanted to join this program because I thought I won’t fit in and I skipped the first week excusing by saying that I was not able to find the library. But the next time my mom showed me the library so I had no chance of skipping it. So just went there and I am glad that my mom showed me the library (Thank you mom). At that time they were having a session of peer networking. All the other youths were very friendly so fitting in was not a problem I have very good friends these days especially Kalden we hang out even after the program is over.
Till now we have done sessions on the following, (1) Peer networking, (2) Healthy Relations, (3) Art and Design, (4) Finance. I gained a lot of confidence and learned a lot of things through this program and the most advantage I gained through peer networking was Michael. He works in a McDonalds so I get every meal on half price. And my friend Kalden is the one who gained most out of it because I am the one paying for his meals all the time.
The session of Healthy relations was so informative I learned many new terms and what should I be doing to a healthy relation with all my friends, elder’s and smaller kids. Art and Design was so fun and enjoyable even though my poster wasn’t chosen I was very happy and the last session about managing our expenses was really a eye opener, oh and I almost forgot about telling you about our bi-weekly trips on the first tour we went to a local farmer’s shop. The most astonishing fact that I learned that dyay was there are pink potatoes! PINK! I never thought of it in my life. I also learned about the 100 mile diet, which means no sugar, no coffee and no vinegar because sugar is generally from Brazil, coffee from somewhere but not in Canada I am sure. Thought it will take the taste out of our life but we can replenish the world and live a healthier life.
Joining this program is a must for every newcomer as it gives you the required confidence that you need to survive here. Now its been like a month and 15 days in Toronto and I don’t feel shy ordering my own Big Mac. I don’t feel shy getting my Ice cap from Tim Hortons and even thought it’s not such a big deal. But if you were a timid teenager a month ago then it will feel great.
So new comers, sign up for this program or just stay in your house like a scared baby!
