Youth Summer Program Leader

Access Alliance Multicultural Health and Community Services is a Community Health Centre that aims to improve health outcomes for the most vulnerable immigrants, refugees, and their communities. We do this by facilitating access to services and addressing systemic inequities. The Centre envisions a future in which diverse individuals, families and communities can achieve health with dignity.
NOTE: To be eligible to participate in Canada Summer Jobs, individualsmust:
- be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
- have been registered as full-time students in the previous academic yearand intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year;
- be Canadian citizens, permanent residents or persons to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act6; and
- be legally entitled to work inCanadain accordance with relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations.
Access Alliance and Children’s Peace Theatre are partnering to offer a two week summer program for youth 12+
Responsibilities:
- Plan, implement, participate in and evaluate appropriate daily activities for summer program for youth 12+ years old.
- Conduct outreach and promotion through designing and preparing flyers and registration materials.
- Provide information, referrals, advice, counselling, support and advocacy for youth, parents and other staff as needed.
- In consultation with other program staff, organize the purchase of materials and supplies.
- Work in team with program volunteers and other community program staff.
- Ensure that participant behaviour problems are dealt with sensitively and effectively, and that behaviour management methods used by all program staff are appropriate to agency policies and guidelines.
- Provide support with administrative aspects of the program, and support with implementing program evaluation.
- To be a student in one of the following areas of study: Health studies, health science, education, early childhood education, community development, community worker, social work with a focus on youth especially on immigrant and refugee children or related field.
- Understanding of issues facing low-income, multi-racial, multi-lingual newcomer immigrant and refugee women, children and families;
- Experience planning and implementing summer programs;
- Experience promoting programs and conducting outreach;
- Familiar with Taylor Massey neighbourhood, including Crescent Town and Teesdale (east end) and/or familiar with Jane/Woolner Neighbourhood (west end);
- Commitment to work from an integrated anti-oppression framework;
- Demonstrated leadership skills and creativity;
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills;
- Excellent computer skills, including ability to use publisher and power point;
- Excellent problem solving and organizational skills;
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team;
- A second language is an asset (particularly Somali, Arabic, Urdu, Tigrinyan, Tagalog, Farsi, Dari, Spanish, Bengali, Amharic)
- Willingness to travel and provide services throughout the City, and to work evenings and weekends
Hours: 32.5 per week
Duration: 9 weeks between June 30 -August 29 2014
